Highway 12 is a national east-west main road and one of the few remaining highways that still run through a city in Finland. Nodeon desiged technical solutions for the Highway 12 Southern Ring Road, improving traffic safety and enhancing land use in Lahti and Hollola.

In 2017, the City of Lahti, the Municipality of Hollola, and the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency signed an implementation agreement for the Southern Ring Road project. The new route bypassing Lahti and Hollola will be completed in three contracts, costing just under 300 million euros. The ring road is expected to open to traffic in 2020.

The ring road will achieve significant savings in transportation costs and facilitate the development of local logistics areas. From a land use perspective, the project will enhance the development of the Lahti station area, Asko area, Sopenkorpi, and Hollola center. Additionally, the quality of life will improve with reduced noise, emissions, and congestion as much of the traffic is redirected away from the urban areas.

Nodeon’s design and engineering expertise utilized since the road planning phase

Nodeon’s core expertise lies in the design of technical systems and solutions for large-scale road projects. Our experts have extensive experience in virtually all major road and tunnel projects in Finland, equipping them with intelligent traffic telematics and other safety systems.

Nodeon has been involved in the design of the Highway 12 Southern Ring Road in Lahti since the road planning phase during 2014–2015. In 2017, Nodeon was also selected as a partner of the implementation alliance Valtari during the development phase. Continuing as a partner, Nodeon serves as the designer for the implementation phase from 2018 onwards. Nodeon has excellent experience in alliance model operations, having participated in Finland’s first major road project using the alliance model at the Tampere Rantaväylä tunnel.

The scope of Nodeon’s design and engineering work at various stages has included the following tasks:

Design of traffic management and HVAC control systems (system design, automation design)
Electrical design for tunnels (20 kV, 400 V, cable routes, instrumentation)
Safety system design for tunnels (fire alarm, emergency telephone, burglar alarm, public address systems, safety and evacuation lighting)
System integration design (interfaces between systems)
Electrical design for road and street lighting.
