Smart traffic management system for the Jokeri 2 public transport tunnel
Automation Infrastructure and Digitalization Smart Mobility Software development
Cities are heavily investing in the development of public transport services in urban areas. Part of the City of Helsinki’s public transport development is the Jokeri 2 public transport tunnel, for which Nodeon implemented a smart traffic management system.
The development of cross-city traffic in Helsinki began as early as the 1960s with the construction of ring roads. However, the development of cross-city public transport has been slow. The Jokeri 2 public transport tunnel, which runs under Helsinki Central Park from Paloheinä to Kuninkaantammi, is the most effective single measure for developing the city’s cross-city public transport in the early 2010s.
As with infrastructure projects in general, the lifecycle of projects from the initial planning stages to commissioning can be very long. The initial planning stages of the Jokeri 2 line began in the early 2000s, and the tunnel was opened to bus traffic in 2015. The next step is to transfer the Jokeri 2 line to rail.
Nodeon’s smart traffic management system is a showcase of the integration of automation and ICT technologies
Nodeon implemented a traffic management system and a communication network enabling data transfer between the tunnel’s devices in the 1,146-meter-long public transport tunnel.
The traffic management system collects information about vehicles moving in the tunnel to provide a real-time situational picture. It responds to changes in traffic conditions, and controls all traffic management devices, ensuring smooth and safe tunnel usage.
Tunnel management systems are typically implemented using SCADA/PLC systems familiar from industry. In the Jokeri 2 tunnel, Nodeon leveraged its multidisciplinary expertise to implement the tunnel’s centralized management system (SCADA) with a control center based on proprietary code. Alongside the software developers, automation experts implemented the control of field devices using programmable logic controllers (PLC).
The design and implementation of the communication network, which plays a significant role in critical infrastructure, was also part of Nodeon’s delivery package for the Jokeri 2 tunnel project.
