From where do people come to the park-and-ride areas?
Park-and-ride areas play an increasingly important role in managing traffic in the Helsinki metropolitan area. License plate based traffic flow measurement provides interesting insights into the usage of the parking area.
Park-and-ride is parking intended for public transportation customers. It helps reduce congestion on city entry routes and in city centers, while also attracting new public transport users from the outskirts of the region.
Nodeon contributed to this development in the famous Länsimetro project.
There are park-and-ride stops for the Länsimetro in 14 municipalities in the Helsinki metropolitan area. The designated park-and-ride areas are located near public transport stations and stops. You can leave your car or bike in the parking lot and continue your journey using public transportation. Car park-and-ride is intended for work time parking, limited to 12 or 24 hours in most places.
Traffic analysis provides better understanding of park-and-ride users
Nodeon provided interesting data for the City of Espoo using traffic flow measurement and analysis services regarding the use of park-and-ride areas for the Länsimetro in Matinkylä and Tapiola.
Nodeon’s traffic analysis service combines license plate recognition cameras and data from Traficom’s vehicle registration database. With the information, we can delve deeper into the profiling of parking area users beyond traditional occupancy times and rates. One of the key aspects is understanding which residential areas’ residents use the parking areas and how frequently.
From the users’ perspective, the measurement is secure; it does not violate the privacy of drivers since personal information is not collected. Only the postal code areas to which vehicles are registered are analyzed.
